Wednesday, August 31st, 2011I have gotten somewhat serious about off roading in my Jeep. I have been thinking about what I should do to make it a bit better off the road. If I did not use it on a daily basis I would go buy a lift kit to give myself some real clearance off road, but of course I live in an area with a lot of curvy roads and I do not want to make that thing even more top heavy than it already is. So right now I am thinking about locking hubs. I still will not have enough clearance to really handle rough terrain, but at least I would be able to get through what I could manage. I am pretty happy that I finally got a better winch though. I was pretty much screwed last Saturday when I made a mistake on that big hill above the river, but I had just enough winch cable to get myself out of it.

The basic function of the watch is to calculate your present height above mean sea level (MSL) basing from the static air pressure. Hence, by analyzing the difference in the atmospheric air pressure, a pilot or a sky diver will know his or her current altitude status. In calibrating, pilots usually base it from an internationally set standard of atmospheric air pressure. By doing so, they would be assured that they are receiving closer estimate elevation readings.
However, with the varying temperatures and atmospheric pressure around the world, an internationally set standard may not be safe to use for altimeter watch calibration. Unlike sky divers that are only confined in a specific territory, pilots may travel in very far distant places. Hence, a local atmospheric pressure is safer to use. Aircraft setting dials allows pilots to adjust it to a local setting. In fact, a lot of airports broadcast the existing local atmospheric pressure across airwaves so pilots will have basis on their calibrations. However, some planes that fly at higher altitudes may use internationally set air pressure standard. But for those that fly at a lower altitude, a local standard is more preferable to reduce the risk for midair collision.
On the other hand, it is safer for sky divers to base their altimeter watch calibration on the locally set standard of atmospheric pressure. This will give them a more accurate basis for altimeter readings that will determine their every move. A sky diver is very dependent on his or her altimeter watch in determining when to jump, how long will be the free fall, and when to deploy the parachute. Any wrong moves among the tree will put ones life in danger.
For pilots and sky divers, knowing the most accurate altitude matters much. With proper calibration and careful selection, they surely come up with an altimeter watch that caters most to their needs ensuring their utmost safety.
